'Against our values': J-K grand Mufti condemns fashion show in ramdan

The Gulmarg fashion show which displayed models in skiwear brought out robust anger from religious leaders and political figures.

Gulmarg fashion show amid Ramzan (X/@GreaterKashmir)

Nasir-ur-Islam who serves as Jammu and Kashmir’s grand mufti issued a stern declaration against the Gulmarg fashion show which he described as a “cultural invasion” during the sacred month of Ramzan on Monday which is completely unacceptable. Our traditions combined with religious values stand opposed to this behavior. The grand mufti demanded legal prosecution of the responsible parties and called for central government intervention.

 

 

Gulmarg fashion show 

He declared that “Such heinous acts are unacceptable in Islam” while expressing sadness through his statement. He added that the central government should take measures to prevent similar incidents from happening in J&K. The fashion show sparking controversy because of its models wearing skiwear generated intense criticism from religious leaders among other political figures and civil society members.

Jammu and Kashmir Assembly

The designers from Delhi operated under the names Shivan Bhatiya and Narresh Kukreja when they unveiled their skiwear collection on March 7 to observe the 15th anniversary of their designer label. The chief priest of Kashmir named Mirwaiz Umar Farooq stated the fashion event to be "outrageous" through his Sunday X post. The post from Mirwaiz Umar Farooq led Omar Abdullah to conduct an inquiry and he stated his intent to investigate the matter while protests erupted at the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday.

The event aimed purely at celebrating creative ski lifestyle practices with no desire to defame religious feelings or any participant group. The Kashmir religious leader Farooq expressed his shock through his Sunday social media post when he stated "Outrageous!" Photos and videos from the obscene fashion show organization in #Gulmarg during Ramzan month went viral recently to the shock and anger of the population.
